KOCHI: Police are investigating whether more women have fallen prey to Mohammed Shafi, the mastermind of the twin human sacrifice case, even as they received reports he lured two Kochi students to Elanthoor and would have raped them.

“Shafi is a sexual pervert who has adopted various means, including black magic as in this case, to satisfy his perversions. A thorough investigation must therefore be carried out to determine if more people were similarly sacrificed or if more people were involved in the crime,” said a report submitted by the Special Investigations Team (SIT) investigating on the case in a Kochi court on Tuesday, seeking custody of the accused.

The First Class Magistrate Court sent the three defendants — Shafi, Bhagawal Singh and Laila — into custody until 5 p.m. on October 24. Meanwhile, SIT is collecting information on two students staying at a hostel in Kochi who were suspected of being sexually harassed by Shafi, sources said.

The two girls frequently visited Adheen’s restaurant run by Shafi near the Shenoy theatre. “The information was transmitted to the SIT by a person close to Shafi whose statement was taken recently. Shafi took the duo to Elanthoor and raped them at Singh’s residence. Over the past year, Shafi has been a frequent visitor to the house,” a source said, adding that once confirmed, more cases will be recorded.

In the custody application, SIT said the defendant needed further questioning to determine if there were other grounds. “The gold ornaments of deceased women have disappeared. They appear to have been sold or pawned by the accused. They have not yet been found,” police said.

Sources said SIT later discovered that Shafi, after murdering Padmam, pledged his ornaments to a private moneylender in Gandhinagar in Kochi. CCTV footage in this regard was recovered and information gathered from the lender.

Crime has no equivalent in recent past, court says

Six sovereign gold ornaments have been pawned for Rs 1.5 lakhs. Steps have been taken to recover the ornaments, they said. Money received for witchcraft and the weapon used to commit the crime must be recovered, the app says. The investigation must also be extended to pending disappearance cases, he said.

The team will also examine how Shafi learned the sorcery tricks to trap Singh and Laila. A few books, which would have been read by Shafi and other defendants during the ritual, were recovered. “The owners of these books must be found,” he said.

The accused was to be taken to various locations in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam and Ernakulam districts to collect evidence with the help of the forensic wing, according to the application. Details of visitors to Singh’s house should also be collected. The court observed that the crime had no equivalent in the state in the recent past and stunned the conscience of society as a whole.
